The baobab (Adansonia digitata), which often grows 35 to 50 feet in diameter, with some specimens reaching 60 feet. (In the city of Santa Maria del Tule in Oaxaca, Mexico, there are 7 cypress trees known as the Tule Trees which are comparably thick. However, cypress trees of this size are extremely rare.) Shown here is the Sunland baobab near Modjadjiskloof in Limpopo province, South Africa. A pub built in 1933 in one cavity in the trunk once hosted 60 patrons, while another cavity houses a wine cellar. |
